Post #3 The Use of Discordant Sound
Discordant sound is mostly used during adventurous action films to enhance what is going on in the scene. They are also used to create tension in horror films. These types of sound activate the primal fear in humans and animals.
According to the Guardian, "natural animal calls were manipulated in terms of pitch and timbre to create an unnerving soundtrack" and "an electronic instrument, the trautonium, was used to create a terrifying avian "language". This means that the use of extreme strokes on certain instruments generate horrific sounds. This may be utilized to scare the audience.

A sting is anticipation in a sound with punctuation at the end. A good example of this is the violin music in insidious. This music usually appears when a jump-scare is about to pop up and the producers want to create anticipation within their audience. The purpose of building anticipation is to grow the suspense within a shot to further affect the audience's awareness. Horror movie developers use this a lot!
Discordant sound can also progress a story. It may represent the conflict of a character or their issues. In horror films, these sounds can show where a character may be or their relationship with their surrounding area and the people within it.
For example, the girl in my final cut will have an uncomfortable relationship with her alternate. This will be displayed not only with composition but discordant sound. The high pitched and nonlinear noise will present to the audience how uneasy the girl feels when she is near the doppelganger.
