Post #8 Typical Story Patterns In My Drama

In horror drama, many assumptions can be made on the story's plot. This is because directors repeatedly use the same conventions of other horror themed media. The fear inducing elements such as darkness or isolation create that imitation of horror. However, when a new element is added to the mix, that is how directors get their audience to feel shocked and surprised.

One story pattern that is often seen in horror drama is supernatural/evil beings trying to take over or kill the protagonist mentally and physically. This pattern conveys the fearful emotion by relating to death or taking advantage of the fears that the main character has. Their unseen presence also adds to this by allowing their target to feel as if they are being watched. This feeling is disliked by many due to the negative attention they are given.

An example of this may be found in the horror film, "Long Legs". the main character is tortured mentally by the demonic being, (antagonist) "Long Legs". She feels his presence where ever she goes, especially in places that he has visited as if he knows where she is at all times. As his character obtains more screen time, the more of his origin unravels.

In my final cut, a typical story pattern I will follow is the protagonist being distracted by their phone, leading them to dismay. This will produce fear in my audience by showing what might happen if they become too attached to their phones. However, it may also cause them to appreciate nature or spend more time with their pets than on devices.
